How to set up Discord color roles
Color roles let members choose from a small, intentional palette instead of asking staff to change names by hand. This setup uses ordinary Discord roles with colors and the Build Discord Bots Reaction Roles module to map each role to an emoji. Reaction Roles is a Pro module. It assigns the predefined roles you create; it does not generate arbitrary hex colors or make color choices exclusive.

Before you start
- Use an online Build Discord Bots bot in the server you manage, with Pro. Keep a text channel ready for the panel, and use a second ordinary account for a safe test.
- In Discord Server Settings → Roles, create a few ordinary roles such as Red, Blue and Green and give each the color you want members to display. Do not put staff, moderation, access or paid permissions on a self-selected color role.
- Your account needs Manage Roles to start the Reaction Roles wizard. The bot needs Manage Roles and must sit above every color role it will assign. For prefix commands such as !reactionrole, enable Message Content Intent in the Discord Developer Portal if your bot checklist requires it.
Put the palette in the right Discord role order
Open Server Settings → Roles in Discord before creating a panel. Keep the bot’s highest role above Red, Blue, Green and every other color role that the panel will assign. The Reaction Roles wizard only offers ordinary, unmanaged roles below the bot, and Discord will refuse the bot’s assignment when its role is not high enough.
For a member’s name, Discord displays the color from that member’s highest colored role. Put the self-selected color roles above any colored auto-role or other colored role that should not win, while still keeping them below the bot. If an existing role must stay above the palette, make that role colorless or accept that it will control the displayed color. This is Discord role hierarchy, not a setting in the panel.
Enable Reaction Roles and save panel defaults
Open the bot in the dashboard, choose Modules, turn on Reaction Roles and use its gear button for Settings. Select the intended server. In Default Panel Channel, choose the text channel for the color menu, or leave it as None if you want the Discord wizard to ask where to post each time. Settings are saved for the selected server, so check the selector before saving.
Set a clear Default Panel Title and Default Panel Description, such as “Choose your name color” and “React to one color. Remove your previous color reaction when you change it.” Panel Embed Color only styles the panel itself; it does not set member name colors. Leave Max Roles Per Panel at its default of 20 or choose a lower limit for a small palette. Turn on Allow Role Removal On Reaction Remove so removing an old color reaction also removes that old color role, then click Save Settings and wait for Saved ✓.
Publish the emoji-to-color panel
In Discord, run !reactionrole (or !rr) from an account with Manage Roles. If you saved a Default Panel Channel, use the wizard’s defaults or choose Customize Title & Description; otherwise choose the panel channel first. The dashboard defaults are only starting values. The wizard is where you select the actual roles and emoji mappings.
Add Red with a red-circle emoji, Blue with a blue-circle emoji, and any other palette role you prepared. The wizard shows only eligible roles below the bot’s highest role and excludes @everyone and integration-managed roles. Choose one unique emoji per role. Use Preview to read the title, instructions and mappings, then choose Finish & Create. The bot posts the panel and adds its reactions to that message.
Test two colors and remove the previous one
From the ordinary test account, react to Red and confirm that the Red role appears and the name uses red. Then react to Blue. The Blue role is added too; that is expected because Reaction Roles does not treat color roles as a single-choice group. Check which color Discord displays based on the order you arranged in Server Settings → Roles.
Remove the Red reaction. With Allow Role Removal On Reaction Remove enabled, the Red role should be removed while Blue remains. Confirm that the displayed name color now matches the remaining highest colored role. If you turned role removal off, the old role staying in place is expected and staff must remove it manually. Repeat this small test after changing role positions or adding another palette color.
Fix a role that is added but whose color does not show
First inspect the member’s roles in Discord. If the selected color role is present but the name has another color, that member already has a colored role higher in the hierarchy. Move the selected palette roles above the competing colored role, or remove the competing role’s color if it should not control names. Changing the panel embed color will not affect this: it changes only the panel appearance.
If the reaction does not add the role at all, confirm that Enable Reaction Roles is on for this server, the bot has Manage Roles, and the bot’s highest role is above the target color role. Reopen the wizard after moving roles: unavailable roles are filtered out when the wizard builds its list. Also confirm that the test account reacted with the exact emoji shown on the published panel. Use the Missing Permissions guide below for a broader read-only permission check of a hierarchy or channel-permission problem.
Keep the palette safe and understandable
Use !listroles (or !rrlist) to find the panel later, including its channel, message ID and emoji-role pairs. To change the choices, open the wizard for that channel and update the existing panel rather than leaving members two competing color menus. !deleterole (or !rrdelete) stops the bot watching a panel and deletes it; members keep color roles they already received until a staff member changes them.
Reaction Roles is a Pro feature. If Pro access ends, new reactions stop granting or removing roles, while members keep the roles they already hold. Review the Reaction Roles setup guide for broader panel management, the self-roles guide for safe member choice, the Carl-bot comparison for product context, and Pricing for current plan terms.
Frequently asked questions
Why did the bot add my color role but my name color did not change?
Discord uses the member’s highest colored role. Check whether the member has another colored role above the selected palette role, then move the palette role above it or make the competing role colorless if appropriate.
Why is a color role missing from the Reaction Roles wizard?
The wizard excludes @everyone, integration-managed roles and roles at or above the bot’s highest role. Put the bot above the color role and make sure the bot has Manage Roles.
Can members choose only one color?
Not automatically. Reaction Roles grants every mapped role a member reacts for. Ask members to remove their previous reaction, and keep Allow Role Removal On Reaction Remove enabled if that removal should also remove the old role.
Are Discord color roles included on the Free plan?
The Discord roles are your server roles, but the Reaction Roles panel that assigns them is a Pro module.
