Set up voice XP in the Leveling module

Updated · 7 min read

Voice XP is an opt-in addition to the Leveling module: members earn XP for time spent together in a voice channel, on top of the XP they already earn from messages. It adds to the same XP total, level, leaderboard and level-role rewards, with no second currency, module or database table. This guide enables it from the dashboard, explains exactly who is eligible and when a session resets, and gives you a two-account test. Voice XP is part of the existing Pro Leveling module at no extra charge.

Before you start

  1. Understand how voice XP works

Voice XP is not a separate feature from message XP; it shares the same per-member XP total, the same level formula, the same leaderboard and the same level-role rewards. It is off by default for every server, and turning it on does not require a new bot permission or Discord intent, because every generated bot already declares the voice-state intent it relies on.

While it is on, members earn a flat XP Per Full Voice Minute, 10 by default and adjustable from 1 to 100. That flat rate ignores message XP multipliers entirely, and it never changes the message XP cooldown timestamp or the total message count message XP tracks. Eligibility is checked every 15 seconds, and only a complete, continuously eligible minute is ever awarded, so an interrupted session earns nothing for the partial time.

  2. Turn on voice XP and set the rate

On your bot's page, open Leveling under Modules, click its gear button titled Settings, and pick your server in the Server selector, the same way you would for message XP settings. In the Voice XP section, switch on Earn XP in voice channels. It starts off for every server, even one where message XP is already running.

Set XP per full voice minute to a whole number from 1 to 100; the default is 10. The dashboard rounds a decimal down and holds a number outside that range at the nearest limit, and the bot uses 10 if a saved value is ever invalid. Click Save Settings and wait for Saved ✓, restarting the bot from its page if the dialog reports that live sync to the bot runtime failed.

  3. Know who actually earns voice XP

A member earns voice XP only while at least one other non-bot, non-deafened member shares the same regular voice channel. A member alone, or accompanied only by a bot or by a deafened companion, earns nothing. The server's AFK channel, Stage channels, and any channel on the No-XP Channels list are excluded for both voice and message XP. Being muted does not block voice XP, but being deafened, server-deafened or suppressed does, because the bot reads voice state rather than detecting speech, so it has no way to know whether a member is actually talking.

Changing voice channels, or losing eligibility such as becoming the last person in the channel, discards whatever partial minute was in progress; the next eligible minute starts fresh. Changing the per-minute rate or the No-XP Channels list while a member is mid-minute also starts a new minute once the bot observes the change. None of this measures speech, keyboard activity or account authenticity, so it cannot by itself prevent members from sitting together without talking.

  4. Exclude specific voice channels

Voice XP reads the same No-XP Channels list that message XP uses, under No-XP Channels → Channels With XP Disabled. The channel picker loads your server's real channels and includes voice channels, so you can add an admin-only or AFK-adjacent voice channel the same way you would exclude a bot-command text channel from message XP. Excluding a voice channel stops voice XP there without affecting message XP, or voice XP in any other channel you have not listed.

  5. Level-ups reuse your existing announcements and roles

A voice-XP level-up runs the exact same announcement and level-role code as a message-XP level-up, so Level Up Announcements, Level Up Message and Level Roles need no separate setup for voice. Announcement Mode's Current Channel option posts to the voice channel's text chat when a voice session triggers the level-up, since that is where the event happened; Specific Channel, Direct Message (DM) and Disabled keep their usual meaning. A level role is still checked and assigned even when announcements are disabled.

Because voice XP and message XP add to one running total, a member can cross a level from either source, and whatever roles you already configured for message XP apply the same way. There is nothing module-specific to configure for voice beyond the toggle and the rate.

  6. What a restart or disconnect does to a session

Voice sessions live only in memory; nothing but already-earned XP is saved. A bot restart, an observed gateway disconnect and reconnect, the server becoming unavailable, disabling the module, or a gap of more than 45 seconds between checks all clear in-progress credit, and the next eligible check simply starts a new minute. There is no backfill for time the bot could not observe, and a long delay before an announcement can send resets the session instead of letting XP catch up afterward.

Already-earned XP is unaffected by any of this: each complete minute is written to the same XP storage message XP uses as soon as it is earned, before the bot waits on an announcement. If a single award fails, only that member's current partial session is dropped; it is not retried.

  7. Test it with two accounts

Save your settings, then join a regular voice channel with two accounts that are not deafened: your own account plus a second human account, an alt, or a willing member. Stay together for a little over a minute, then check your XP with the rank command, which also answers to level and xp. The total should have grown by your configured rate, and your message XP cooldown should be unaffected. Leave and rejoin to confirm a fresh minute starts, and have one account deafen itself to confirm no XP is awarded while that happens.

  8. Plans and what happens on Free

Voice XP has no separate charge: it is part of the existing Pro Leveling module. If you move from Pro to Free, Leveling is turned off for that bot, which stops voice XP along with message XP. Your saved voice XP settings are not deleted, and upgrading to Pro switches Leveling, and voice XP, back on.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't anyone earning voice XP?

Check that Earn XP in voice channels is switched on for the selected server and saved. Then confirm at least two non-bot, non-deafened members are together in a regular voice channel that is not the AFK channel, a Stage channel, or on the No-XP Channels list.

Does voice XP use the same level-up announcements and roles as message XP?

Yes. A voice-XP level-up runs the same announcement and level-role code as a message-XP level-up, using whatever Announcement Mode and Level Roles you already configured. Current Channel posts to the voice channel's text chat.

Does a restart or disconnect lose already-earned voice XP?

No. Only a full, continuously eligible minute is ever saved, and once saved it sits in the same storage as message XP. What is lost is an in-progress partial minute, because voice sessions are tracked in memory only, with no backfill for time the bot could not observe.
