How to let Discord members pick their own pronoun roles
Reaction Roles can publish a short panel where members react to pick the pronoun roles that fit them, without asking a moderator for each change. The module treats every emoji-role pair the same way, so a pronoun panel is built with the same wizard used for any other self-service role, just pointed at a different set of roles. This guide creates ordinary He/Him, She/Her and They/Them roles, maps each to an emoji, and checks that a member can hold more than one at a time. Reaction Roles is a Pro module.

Before you start
- A bot online in a test server, with Reaction Roles on Pro.
- Four ordinary roles below the bot's highest role, such as He/Him, She/Her, They/Them and Ask My Pronouns.
- Manage Roles on your own account for setup, and a second, staff-free account for testing.
Create the pronoun roles themselves
Reaction Roles never creates a Discord role on its own; it only maps an emoji to a role that already exists. In Server Settings, add a plain role for each option you want to offer, for example He/Him, She/Her, They/Them and Ask My Pronouns, and give each one no extra permissions. Drag the bot's own role above all four in the role list, because the setup wizard will only offer a role it is actually allowed to hand out.
Skip @everyone and anything managed by an integration or a linked service; the wizard's role picker leaves those out automatically, so they are not useful choices to prepare in advance. A plain color-only role with no permissions keeps the panel safe to show to the whole server, since anyone who can see the panel can take any role listed on it.
Start the wizard and name the panel for pronouns
Type !reactionrole, or its shorter alias !rr, using your bot's prefix (the examples here assume !), in a channel the bot can post in. Pick the destination channel from the dropdown the wizard shows first, then choose Customize Title & Description rather than the stored defaults, so this particular panel can say something like "Pick Your Pronouns" and "React below for every pronoun that fits you" instead of a generic reaction-role heading.
The title, description and embed color you type here apply only to this one panel; they do not overwrite Default Panel Title, Default Panel Description or Panel Embed Color in the module's Settings, which still apply the next time you start the wizard without customizing.
Attach an emoji to each pronoun role
For each role, the wizard asks you to pick it from a dropdown of roles below the bot's position, then offers around two dozen common emoji to react with. Plain colored circles such as a blue, red or green circle, or the question-mark emoji meant for help and support, read clearly next to a pronoun label and need no custom artwork; pick whichever four you like, one per role.
Choosing Custom Emoji instead opens a small form where you can type any standard emoji or a custom emoji from a server the bot shares, such as a flag symbol your community already uses for this purpose. Whichever source you use, the same emoji cannot be mapped twice on one panel, and Preview shows the finished embed to you alone before anyone else sees it.
Publish the panel, or attach it to an existing post
Finish & Create sends a new message with your pronoun options and adds every mapped emoji as a reaction automatically, then replies with that message's ID for your records. If you would rather offer pronouns from a post that already exists, such as your server's introduction message, use !rradd instead: give it the channel, that message's ID, one emoji and one role, for example !rradd #introductions 123456789012345678 🔵 @He/Him, and repeat it once per pronoun role you want attached there.
!rradd does not check whether the bot can actually hand out the role the way the wizard does, so react with a disposable second account right after adding each one to confirm it still works before announcing the panel.
Let members hold more than one, and decide what removal does
Nothing in Reaction Roles limits a panel to one selection: a member who reacts to both He/Him and They/Them simply receives both roles, since each emoji is checked and granted on its own. This fits pronouns well, because people who use more than one set of pronouns are not forced to pick only one reaction.
Allow Role Removal On Reaction Remove decides what taking a reaction back does. With it on, removing a reaction removes the matching role right away. With it off, roles only ever get added through the panel, and a member who wants one taken off needs a staff member to remove it by hand. DM On Role Change, when enabled, messages the member once for each role a reaction adds, but it never sends anything when a reaction, and its role, is removed.
Change, list or retire the panel later
!listroles, or !rrlist, prints every panel in the server along with its channel, message ID and current emoji-to-role pairs, which is the quickest way to find the pronoun panel again later. Picking that channel again from the wizard's first step offers to edit the existing panel instead of starting a new one, so adding a fifth pronoun option later updates the same message rather than duplicating it.
!deleterole, or !rrdelete, takes that message ID, stops the bot watching it and deletes the post; members keep whatever pronoun roles they already picked up. !rrsettings on its own shows the server's saved panel defaults, and !rrsettings color or !rrsettings maxroles followed by a value changes one of those defaults the same way the dashboard does.
Test the panel from an account with no staff roles
Switch to your second account and react to two of the pronoun emoji. Both roles should land on that account within a moment, and a direct message should arrive for each one if DM On Role Change is on. Remove one reaction and confirm the matching role disappears only when Allow Role Removal On Reaction Remove is switched on; otherwise it is expected to stay.
If a reaction adds nothing, open Server Settings and check that the bot's own role still sits above every pronoun role, since moving roles around after publishing the panel can quietly break it. Also confirm Enable Reaction Roles is on for this server, and that you reacted with the exact emoji the panel actually offers rather than a similar-looking one.
Plan access before you roll this out
Reaction Roles sits on Pro, not the Free plan. If a bot's access to Pro ends, existing pronoun roles stay on the members who hold them, but new reactions on the panel stop granting or removing anything until Pro access returns.
Frequently asked questions
Can a member hold more than one pronoun role at once?
Yes. Each emoji grants its own role independently, so reacting to He/Him and They/Them together gives both; the module has no setting that makes pronoun choices exclusive of one another.
What happens when someone removes their reaction later?
The matching role is removed only if Allow Role Removal On Reaction Remove is switched on. With it off, the role stays until a staff member removes it by hand.
Do pronoun roles need special emoji?
No. The wizard's built-in emoji menu already includes plain colored circles and a question mark that read well next to a pronoun label, and Custom Emoji lets you use any standard or server emoji instead.
Is Reaction Roles available on the Free plan?
No. Reaction Roles requires Pro.
