An AI chat bot for Discord with memory and personality
Cortex turns your bot into a member of the community. Mention it and it answers like a person — server questions, banter, explanations, recommendations — with memory of the conversation and the server, so it doesn't reintroduce itself every message. Give it a persona: formal concierge, chaotic gremlin, or in-character for your game — you write the personality, Cortex plays it.
Start freeStart free. Pro is $9.99/month.
It runs on your bot, under your name and avatar, in every server your bot is in. Cortex also supports custom triggers with weighted reply variants, an optional deliberate no-reply chance, and optional restart-safe per-channel or per-user cooldowns. Cortex AI is included in Pro ($9.99/mo — 3 bots, all 44 modules, plus the AI Module Builder).
What you get
Chats like a member
Mention your bot and Cortex answers naturally — questions, banter, server help, anything.
Memory
Cortex remembers context and past conversations per server, so answers stay relevant.
Custom personas
Make it formal, chaotic, or in-character for your community — you define the personality.
What it needs
- Enable Cortex AI on your bot. Custom replies need View Channel, Send Messages and Message Content Intent; these plain-text replies do not make an AI call.
- Configure replies for the selected server in the dashboard. Auto-responders created with !cortexautorespond remain saved with their existing behavior.
Setting it up
- Open your bot’s Modules tab, configure Cortex AI and select a server. Keep Enable auto-responses on, add a trigger and choose Contains, Exact message or Starts with. Matching ignores letter case.
- Add up to 10 reply variants. A blank weight means 1; otherwise use a positive whole number. Leave No reply weight blank (or set it to 0) unless a matching message should sometimes stay silent. Set Cooldown (seconds) from 0 to 86,400 and choose Per channel or Per user in this server. Turn on Keep this cooldown after a bot restart only when that rule should retain its wait, then Save Settings.
Example
Set the exact trigger hello with replies Hello, {user}! at weight 3 and Welcome back, {user}! at weight 1. Leaving No reply weight blank gives the replies 75% and 25% chances. Setting its weight to 1 instead gives the two replies 60% and 20% chances, plus a 20% deliberate silent outcome that does not fall through to AI chat. Set a 60-second Per channel cooldown; further hello messages from anyone in that channel stay silent for 60 seconds, while another channel can reply immediately. Turn on Keep this cooldown after a bot restart to retain that wait through a restart. With Per user instead, the member waits across channels in this server while other members can still receive a reply.
Limits and troubleshooting
Limits
- Use up to 50 dashboard triggers per server, with 1–10 plain-text replies per trigger and up to 2,000 characters per reply. Missing reply weights are equal; a missing or zero no-reply weight is disabled; missing cooldown or 0 means no cooldown. {user}, {server} and {channel} placeholders are supported, without mention notifications.
- The first matching dashboard rule handles the message before legacy auto-responders and AI chat. A deliberate silent outcome also stops there. Cooldowns begin when a matching rule is handled and reset on restart or rule change by default. Turn on Keep this cooldown after a bot restart to retain a positive cooldown through restart; it still resets when the rule changes. The generated bot retains at most 5,000 active saved cooldown scopes per server.
If it doesn’t work
- No reply: check that Cortex and Enable auto-responses are enabled, the correct server is selected, the message matches, and the bot has channel access and Message Content Intent.
- A matching message is silent: it may have selected the optional no-reply outcome, or be waiting for its cooldown; set no-reply weight and cooldown to 0 to disable both. A higher weight changes the chance over repeated replies; it does not guarantee a specific reply.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to add an AI chat bot?
About a minute: create an account, paste your bot token, toggle Cortex AI and start the bot. Mention it and it's already talking; setting a custom persona is one command more.
Is there a free AI chat bot for Discord?
Cortex AI is a Pro module ($9.99/mo — 3 bots, all 44 modules, AI Module Builder included).
Do I need API keys or code?
Neither. The AI runs through the platform — no OpenAI keys to manage, no code to write, no servers to rent. Persona and memory settings are plain-language configuration, and conversations stay scoped to your bot's own database.
