Answer exact Discord lookups from a published Google Sheet

Connect one published Google Sheets tab and let members look up a key with a slash command. Sheet Lookup compares the key exactly while ignoring case and surrounding spaces, then replies privately with the columns you chose.

Sheet Lookup is an opt-in Pro module. It reads a deliberately public Publish to web CSV link; a published sheet is public to anyone with the link. It does not read private sheets, write to Sheets, evaluate formulas or make fuzzy or partial matches.

What you get

Exact-key replies

The first CSV row supplies the column headers. Choose one key column and 1–10 output columns, then use the default /lookup command or a lowercase 1–32-character name you set for that server. Replies are ephemeral, so only the member who ran the command sees them.

Published CSV only

Use Google Sheets File β†’ Share β†’ Publish to web, choose one tab and select Comma-separated values (.csv). The module accepts only the published HTTPS docs.google.com CSV URL, with optional gid and single=true for that published tab.

Bounded on-demand reads

Reads happen when someone looks up a key. Concurrent reads share one fetch; per process, up to 20 sheets stay only in memory for up to about five minutes, subject to a source’s shorter cache directives.

What it needs

Setting it up

  1. In Google Sheets, choose File β†’ Share β†’ Publish to web, select one tab, select Comma-separated values (.csv), and copy the published HTTPS docs.google.com link. The first row must contain nonempty column headers.
  2. Open Sheet Lookup in your bot’s Modules tab, paste the Published CSV link and select Test. The preview detects headers and returns the first five shortened rows without saving settings.
  3. Select a key column and 1–10 output columns. Keep /lookup or choose a 1–32-character lowercase command name, turn on Enable lookups in this server, save, then regenerate and start the bot.

Example

With Item selected as the key column and Answer selected as the output column, /lookup key:rules matches a cell containing Rules after case and surrounding spaces are ignored. The member receives the selected Answer value in a private reply; a second Rules row returns a duplicate-key error instead of an arbitrary answer.

Example commands

CommandWhat it does
/lookup key:your-keyLooks up one exact key in the selected key column and privately returns the selected output columns. The command name can be changed in settings.

Set up Sheet Lookup

In Google Sheets, publish one tab with File β†’ Share β†’ Publish to web. Select that tab and Comma-separated values (.csv), then copy the published HTTPS CSV link. Publishing makes the tab public to anyone with the link.

Enable Sheet Lookup on a Pro bot. In its settings, paste the published CSV link and use Test to detect the header row and preview the first five shortened rows. Select the key column and 1–10 output columns.

Keep the default command name lookup or choose a new 1–32-character lowercase name that is not reserved. Turn on Enable lookups in this server, save, then use the normal regenerate/start workflow. Existing bots need regeneration to receive the module.

Run /lookup with a key from the selected key column. The reply is private and includes the last successful refresh time; it reports an error for no match or duplicate keys.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a private Google Sheet?

No. Sheet Lookup accepts only one published Google Sheets CSV tab. Publishing makes that sheet public to anyone with the link, so do not publish data you cannot share, cache and display.

How does matching work?

The module trims the lookup and key cells, then compares them case-insensitively and exactly. It does not perform partial or fuzzy matching. A duplicate key returns an error instead of choosing a row.

Does it store searches or sheet data?

Lookup queries and query history are not stored. Sheet data stays in bounded in-memory cache only; disabling the module or changing its URL clears cached contents and aborts an in-flight read.
