Get a member’s full-size avatar in Discord

Updated · 4 min read

The Free Tools & Utilities module’s avatar command posts a Discord embed showing a user’s global display avatar at 1024 pixels and direct PNG, JPG and WEBP links. It can include a GIF link when Discord reports an animated global avatar. The command has no server-avatar switch and no size option: it does not fetch or display a member’s server-specific profile avatar.

Before you start

  1. Enable Tools & Utilities and choose a test user

Open your bot’s Modules tab, enable Tools & Utilities for the server and save. If this is an existing bot, use the normal regenerate and start flow, then wait until it is online before testing.

Pick a user who is comfortable being used in the test. The output is based on Discord’s user-level avatar URL, so a server nickname or a server-specific avatar does not change what this command displays.

  2. Run the avatar command with or without a target

The slash form accepts /avatar user:@Member to select a user. The user option is optional, so /avatar by itself returns your own global avatar. With the default prefix, use !avatar @Member or !avatar; !av and !pfp are aliases.

For the prefix form, the handler also tries its first argument as a Discord user ID when there is no mention. If it cannot fetch that ID, it falls back to the caller instead of producing a separate server-member lookup.

  3. The reply is an embed titled with the target’s tag. Its image is requested with dynamic format support at size 1024. Open that image in Discord when you only need to view it at the command’s largest fixed output size.

The embed also has direct 1024px links labelled PNG, JPG and WEBP. If the dynamic avatar URL contains .gif, it additionally shows a GIF link. These are format links for the same global avatar; there is no size selector in the command.

  4. Handle a server-avatar difference or a failed lookup

If the output differs from what you see beside a member’s name in this server, compare it with the user’s global Discord profile avatar. A server profile avatar is not an option in this handler, so use Discord’s member profile directly when that server-only image is what you need.

When an ID lookup does not resolve, check the ID and try a mention. The handler catches avatar errors and sends its generic failure message, but an unresolvable ID alone normally falls back to the person who ran the command.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a Discord member avatar with this bot?

Run /avatar user:@Member, or use !avatar @Member. The user option is optional, so leaving it out returns the caller’s global avatar.

Does the avatar command show a server avatar?

No. The current handler uses the Discord user’s global display avatar and has no server-avatar option.

What avatar sizes does the command support?

The command uses a fixed size of 1024 for its displayed image and PNG, JPG, WEBP and eligible GIF links. It has no size parameter.

Why is there no GIF link for an avatar?

The GIF link is added only when the dynamic global avatar URL indicates an animated GIF. PNG, JPG and WEBP links are always included.
