How to set up a Discord server setup bot
Starting a Discord server from an empty channel list can be slower than deciding what your community actually needs. The Server Builder module provides pre-designed templates and commands to list, preview, and build a template. It is designed for a controlled setup pass, not an irreversible replacement for a mature server. This guide shows how to test a template in a safe server, inspect the result, and avoid the destructive clear-server command. Server Builder is a Pro module.

Before you start
- Use an online bot on Pro in a disposable or new server where you have Administrator. Server Builder commands require Administrator because they create a server structure.
- Do not use a live community as the first test. Invite only staff to the test server, take notes about desired categories and roles, and make sure nobody expects existing channels to be preserved by a template build.
Choose a safe server for the first build
Create a new Discord server or use a staff-only test server for your first Server Builder run. The module is intended to create channels, categories, and roles from a template, so an empty or disposable environment makes the result easy to evaluate. Do not assume it will recognize which existing channel names are important or which integrations depend on a current category structure. A controlled test lets you compare the template against your own onboarding, moderation, and discussion needs before you bring any part of the layout into a live community.
Confirm that the bot is online and that the staff account running commands has Administrator. This requirement reflects the scope of the work: creating a server structure needs permissions that ordinary moderators should not casually use. Review who has that permission before enabling the module. Keep the test separate from any production invite link. The module can generate structure, but it cannot decide your community’s roles, policies, or moderation coverage.
Enable the Pro Server Builder module
Open the bot in Build Discord Bots, select Modules, enable Server Builder, and wait for the bot to return online if it restarts. The module is Pro-only and is not included in the Free plan. Select the test server when using any server-specific dashboard settings and avoid making a live server your first target. Module activation adds the module behavior; it does not silently build channels until an authorized staff member explicitly uses a build command.
Before using a template, write a small checklist: member-facing channels, staff channels, voice needs, onboarding role, and anything that must not be created. This turns the template into a prompt for review rather than a blind copy operation. The product may offer template choices, but a template does not prove that every channel name, role, or permission suits your server. Plan to adjust Discord permissions after a test, and keep an administrator available who can inspect the result without exposing unfinished rooms to members.
For voice rooms that appear only when members need them, configure the separate Pro Temporary Voice Rooms module after reviewing your layout. Choose a join-to-create trigger and a category in its settings. Members join the trigger to get a personal room; empty rooms are cleaned up after a configurable grace period. Follow the Temporary Voice Rooms link below for setup and owner controls.
List the available templates
Run `templates` in the test server from an administrator account. It displays the available server templates so you can choose a template number rather than guessing. Read the descriptions and compare the proposed structure with your checklist. A gaming community, support server, and small private group can need very different categories, even when all of them use Discord. The right template is the one that gives you a starting point to review, not the one with the most channels or the most impressive name.
Keep the initial selection small. Building several templates into one test server makes it difficult to tell which categories came from which decision. If more than one approach seems plausible, use separate disposable test servers or document the result before trying another. The Server Builder module’s purpose is to reduce repetitive setup, not to discourage deliberate design. Your moderators still need clear spaces for reports and decisions, and your members still need understandable navigation and permissions once the test becomes a real server.
Preview before creating anything
Run `previewtemplate` with the template number you are considering. Previewing lets staff inspect the planned layout before they start the creation action. Compare categories, channel names, and roles against the checklist you wrote. Look especially for channels that should be private, roles that need lower permissions, or spaces you do not want at all. A preview is the right time to question the structure because no member-facing setup has been committed yet. Capture the staff feedback in a note rather than relying on memory.
Do not confuse preview with a security review. Discord permissions and role ordering deserve their own inspection after a build, because a template can create a useful starting layout without knowing your exact staff model. If the preview does not fit, choose another template or construct your server manually. There is no requirement to use every module feature. A good server setup is one your team can maintain, and declining a template that does not match your needs is better than creating channels you immediately have to hide or delete.
Build one reviewed template
When the preview is acceptable, run `buildserver` with the selected template number from an Administrator account. Stay in the test server while it completes and inspect the resulting categories, channels, and roles. Do not invite members until you have checked the layout. The command creates the designed structure; it does not automatically write your rules, configure all moderation settings, or know which channels should be announced in your public onboarding. Treat the build as a first pass you own and can refine.
Walk through the new server with a non-administrator test account. Check which channels are visible, whether staff areas are hidden, and whether the intended role assignment makes sense. Review the bot’s own role position and permissions if you plan to add Welcome, Rules, or Reaction Roles later. A channel name alone does not make a room safe or useful. Adjust Discord permission overwrites before you share an invite, and write down any changes you will need to reproduce if you decide to use the same template elsewhere.
Avoid destructive commands on a live server
The module also has `clearserver`, a command documented as dangerous because it removes all channels and categories and requires the literal confirmation value. Do not use it as a shortcut for rearranging a live community. This guide does not recommend it, and a template test does not justify erasing established conversations or channel structure. If a test is no longer needed, delete that disposable test server through your normal Discord administration process only after confirming it is truly the test server and no one needs its contents.
For a real server, take an inventory of existing channels and integrations before any structural change. Move gradually, announce navigation changes to members, and keep a staff fallback place for support. Server Builder can save time at the beginning of a project, but it is not a data migration system or a backup service. The responsible route is to use it for an initial planned layout, then maintain permissions and channels with the same care you would apply to a manually created server.
Frequently asked questions
Is Server Builder included on Free?
No. Server Builder is a Pro module.
Why does buildserver require Administrator?
The command creates a server structure, so the module requires Administrator permission for that action.
Should I use clearserver to start over?
No. It is a dangerous command that removes all channels and categories. Test templates in a disposable server instead.
