Discord temporary voice channels: join to create

Discord temporary voice channels give members a room when they need one. Choose a “Join to create” voice channel and a category in your dashboard. When a member joins the trigger, the bot creates a personal room, applies your name template and member limit, and moves them in.

Owners control their rooms with /room commands. Empty rooms are removed after a configurable grace period. On restart, the enabled module keeps occupied rooms and removes tracked empty rooms when Discord access permits. Temporary Voice Rooms is opt-in and included in Pro; it only manages rooms it created.

What you get

Join to create

Pick a trigger voice channel, category and room name template. Use {username} for the member’s display name.

Owner controls

Rename, set a user limit, lock or unlock, permit a member, or transfer ownership with /room. Ownership also passes to a remaining member when the owner leaves.

Safe cleanup

The default grace period is 30 seconds. Rejoining cancels deletion. Persistent records identify rooms created by this module, including after a restart.

Example commands

CommandWhat it does
/room rename nameQueue a new room name. Repeated requests replace the pending name; renames are spaced up to ten minutes apart.
/room limit nChoose 0–99 members; 0 means unlimited.
/room permit @userAllow a member to connect to your room. Also use /room lock, /room unlock and /room transfer.

Setup and room controls

Enable Temporary Voice Rooms on a Pro bot and use the normal regenerate/start workflow. Open Modules → Temporary Voice Rooms → Settings and select your Discord server.

Choose an existing voice channel for Join to create and a category for new rooms. Set the name template ({username} inserts a display name), the default user limit (0–99; 0 means unlimited), and the grace period (5–600 seconds; default 30). Save settings.

Give the bot View Channel, Connect, Move Members, Manage Channels and Manage Permissions in the category, and Move Members on the trigger channel. Join the trigger to create your room.

While in your room, use /room rename name, /room limit n, /room lock, /room unlock, /room permit @user, or /room transfer [@user]. Transfer targets must already be in the room. Lock denies Connect for @everyone; Discord administrator and explicit role/member permissions still apply. Clearing the trigger setting stops new creation while tracked rooms continue to receive cleanup.

Example: create a trigger named Join to create and select a category named Game Night. Keep the template {username}’s room and the default 30-second grace period. When Alex joins the trigger, the bot creates Alex’s room in Game Night and moves Alex there. These names illustrate a setup you can test in your own server.

While still in that room as its owner, Alex can run /room limit n:4 for a four-member limit, then /room lock and /room permit user:@Sam to allow Sam to connect. Lock changes @everyone’s Connect permission; an administrator or a member with another explicit allow may still connect. It does not disconnect members already in the room.

Alex can use /room rename name:Game Night to queue a new name; repeated requests replace the pending name, and renames are spaced up to ten minutes apart. To hand over control, use /room transfer user:@Sam after Sam has joined. If the owner leaves, ownership can pass to another remaining non-bot member.

When everyone leaves, the bot schedules deletion after the configured grace period and checks again that the room is empty before deleting it. Rejoining cancels that deletion. In this example, the default delay is 30 seconds; Discord permissions or API failures can delay cleanup. The Join to create trigger stays available for the next member. Test creation, owner commands, rejoining and final cleanup before opening it to your community.

Frequently asked questions

Which permissions does the bot need?

Allow View Channel, Connect, Move Members, Manage Channels and Manage Permissions in the selected category, plus Move Members on the trigger channel. Temporary Voice Rooms uses the non-privileged Guild Voice States intent.

What happens when a room owner leaves?

Ownership passes to another member still in the room. When nobody remains, the grace period starts. After a restart, tracked empty rooms are removed immediately and occupied rooms remain.

Can it delete my existing voice channels?

No. It only manages channel IDs recorded when this module creates a room. It does not discover rooms by their name or category. Disable new creation by clearing the trigger channel setting.
